Energy Vault has kicked off construction on a new AI infrastructure campus in Snyder, Texas, marking its entry into the data center arena. The project involves deploying Crusoe Spark modular data centers, initially supporting up to 25 MW of IT load.
The partnership started with a strategic agreement signed in February 2026 between Energy Vault (NYSE: NRGV) and Crusoe, a firm known for modular AI data centers and managed inference services. Crusoe will install its Spark data center modules at Energy Vault’s existing technology center, transforming the site into a hybrid energy and computing hub.
Integrating Energy Storage with AI Computing
Energy Vault is taking advantage of its current assets on site, including the Cross Trails battery energy storage system (BESS) already providing power and ancillary services to the ERCOT grid. This is the company’s first fully owned and operated battery storage system. By adding AI data centers to energy storage infrastructure, the company aims to deliver higher revenue per megawatt compared to standalone battery systems.
The modular “powered shell” infrastructure model means Energy Vault acts as landlord and power supplier, while Crusoe handles the data center operations. The existing power setup accelerates Crusoe’s deployment timeline, while Energy Vault expects improved EBITDA margins. This approach could turn Energy Vault’s portfolio of energy storage sites into potential AI data center campuses.
The 25 MW campus functions primarily as a proof of concept. The real test will come with announcements about further expansions or similar projects at other Energy Vault sites. If successful, this could reshape the company’s revenue streams.
