"AAA CLOs actually carry higher credit ratings than US Treasuries in certain rating agency frameworks," Centrifuge argued in a recent post, pushing back on the assumption that government bonds are always the safest bet for institutional money. The blockchain protocol focused on tokenizing real-world assets is making a straightforward pitch: collateralized loan obligations deserve serious consideration from anyone chasing yield without accepting excessive risk.

Here's what separates CLOs from Treasuries. AAA CLOs are floating-rate instruments, meaning their coupons adjust whenever benchmarks like SOFR move. That floating structure nearly eliminates duration risk, the invisible drag that crushes traditional bond returns when interest rates shift. They also sit higher in credit ratings under certain rating frameworks because CLO tranches stack with subordination layers that shield the top tranche from losses. Throw in the spread over SOFR that CLOs generate, and you get yield above what Treasuries of equivalent credit quality would pay. For institutional investors hunting for returns in a lower-rate environment, that gap matters.

Centrifuge has real money riding on this thesis through its Janus Henderson Anemoy AAA CLO Fund, ticker JAAA. The fund pulled in a $1 billion allocation from Sky/Grove last June, with hundreds of millions now locked across the platform. The broader Centrifuge ecosystem has crossed $1 billion in onchain value, and the protocol recently added a partnership with institutional custody custodians to let regulated institutions hold JAAA without regulatory friction. A June 2026 deal with Kraken Institutional opened qualified custody access, removing barriers that traditionally kept tokenized structured products out of compliance departments.

But the reality check arrives fast. CLOs are built on pools of leveraged loans, and while AAA tranches sit protected at the top, a real credit crunch would still hit them. The tokenization layer adds fresh vectors for failure: smart contract bugs, oracle miscalculations, and the fact that onchain settlement for complex structured products remains mostly untested. Centrifuge's broader platform has also moved into tokenized high-yield corporate bonds with New York Life Investment Management, stacking another bet on crypto's ability to handle sophisticated financial plumbing. Whether institutions will actually move serious capital into these products at scale remains the open question.
