August 5, 2026. AWS and JPMorgan Chase just formalized a multi-year research partnership that's pushing quantum computing out of the lab and toward actual financial problems. Portfolio optimization. Risk analysis. The kind of mathematical grunt work that classical computers either do slowly or simply cannot do.

The partnership runs through Amazon Braket, AWS's managed quantum computing service. Researchers can experiment with different quantum hardware without building machines themselves. The two teams are developing hybrid quantum-classical algorithms, where quantum processors handle what they're uniquely suited for, then classical computers finish the job.

May 2024 brought a concrete milestone. A joint study examined quantum speedups for maximum independent set problems and got published in Physical Review Research. That's peer review, not a blog post.

At AWS re:Invent 2025, the partnership reported scaling hybrid quantum experiments to hundreds of qubits using Rydberg atom hardware. A quantum algorithm called qReduMIS got specific attention for optimization problems with direct financial applications.

JPMorgan started building internal quantum research capacity back in 2020. They were early. Now they're serious.

The blockchain security angle

JPMorgan's quantum research explicitly targets "fortifying defenses against potential cryptocurrency vulnerabilities attributable to quantum advancements." The worry is simple. Sufficiently powerful quantum computers could crack the mathematical problems protecting crypto wallets today and threaten the cryptographic foundations of Bitcoin and Ethereum.

That concern has already accelerated development of post-quantum cryptography. These are new encryption standards designed to survive when quantum computers get powerful enough to stress-test current methods. The National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized its first post-quantum cryptographic standards in 2024.

The broader quantum landscape is crowded now. Multiple banks, tech firms, and governments are pouring resources into the same race. JPMorgan's explicit focus on blockchain vulnerabilities suggests crypto's security assumptions are no longer theoretical problems for them. They're operational.
