Sberbank, Russia's largest financial institution, has announced a firm deadline to introduce cryptocurrency trading infrastructure and a digital depository by December 1, 2026. This comes ahead of the country’s new crypto regulations scheduled to take effect on September 1, 2026, which aim to formalize licensing and compliance processes by mid-2027.

Key Details of Sberbank’s Crypto Initiative and Regulatory Landscape

The bank plans to develop a full crypto trading platform paired with a digital custody service designed to record ownership and facilitate transactions outside public blockchains. This system will enable the management of wallets for deposits, withdrawals, and transfers. Alexander Vedyakhin, Sberbank’s first deputy chairman, has confirmed that all components will be ready ahead of the December deadline.

Russia’s fresh regulatory framework will require exchanges, brokers, banks, and digital depositories to obtain licenses by July 1, 2027, after the regulation starts in September 2026. Investors will be split into qualified and non-qualified categories with different rules. For example, non-qualified investors must pass a knowledge test and are capped at purchasing 300,000 rubles worth of qualifying cryptocurrencies per year via a single intermediary.

Qualified investors, after testing, get access to a broader range of assets with no annual purchase limits. The regulations also restrict public trading to cryptocurrencies with an average market capitalization surpassing 5 trillion rubles and daily trading volumes exceeding 1 trillion rubles over the preceding two years. The Bank of Russia will oversee custody standards and consumer protection protocols.

Market Impact and Sberbank’s Past Moves in Digital Assets

Sberbank’s push into regulated crypto trading follows earlier steps the bank took in digital finance. Since 2022, it has been registered as an information system operator in Russia, issuing digital financial assets and Bitcoin- and Ethereum-linked structured products. The new platform will further position Sberbank at the heart of Russia's evolving crypto ecosystem.

The bank’s timeline aligns tightly with Russia’s regulatory deadlines, signaling strong intent to comply and actively participate in the forthcoming legal crypto market. This move arrives amidst broader trends in the region’s financial sector seeking to legitimize and control digital asset trading. The strategic timing also contrasts with firms like BitMart, which are winding down their crypto platforms by early 2027.
