Brent crude slipped below $80 a barrel Thursday morning, landing at $79.08, while West Texas Intermediate fell to $74.69. The selloff happened fast. Iran-related talks through Oman shifted trader sentiment almost overnight, cooling down the geopolitical premium that had kept prices elevated.

Here's what actually moved the needle. U.S. crude inventories jumped by 2.5 million barrels last week, hitting 407 million total. The market had braced for a decline around 1.5 million barrels instead. That surprise surplus created immediate downward pressure. At the same time, any hint that Washington and Tehran might ease tensions around the Strait of Hormuz tanker traffic removes part of the risk premium baked into both Brent and WTI prices.

Diplomacy cuts one way, supply cuts another

OPEC+ complicated the picture by green-lighting a production bump of 188,000 barrels per day starting in September, completing their rollback of the 2023 voluntary cuts. Traders are now hunting for clarity on fourth-quarter output plans, but the group hasn't signaled much yet. That uncertainty lingers even as the immediate supply shock eases.

The geopolitical backdrop hasn't gone quiet either. Iran warned it could retaliate against energy infrastructure if provoked again, and tanker security in the Gulf remains a live concern. So the relief is real but fragile.

Chart signals a test, not a collapse

On the technical side, Brent is testing a demand zone near $79.67. If buyers step in and hold above $76.57, the contract could bounce toward low-to-mid-$80s resistance. A sustained break higher would put the $86-$89 zone back in play. But a four-hour close below $76.57 opens the door to $73.42 support, and further down to a broader demand zone around $69.30. The setup depends entirely on whether buyers show up now or whether selling pressure continues.
