A federal investigation has caught an NFT entrepreneur in an embarrassing spot. The founder raised $10 million from investors, then spent nearly every penny on casino losses, reckless market trades, and paying himself to DJ at nightclubs. Regulators are now looking into whether the money was mishandled, fraud, or just catastrophically poor judgment.

The cash evaporated fast. Instead of building the project or returning funds, the founder treated the capital like personal spending money. Gambling losses ate up chunks. He made wild trading bets that tanked. And then there were the DJ appearances, which prosecutors found particularly odd since the project had nothing to do with entertainment.

How $10 Million Vanishes

Court filings show the timeline. Investors wired money in late 2021 when NFT hype was at peak fever. By mid-2022, roughly 80% of it was gone. The spending wasn't spread across business expenses, salaries, or marketing. It was concentrated in three buckets: personal gambling, self-directed trading accounts, and club DJ bookings that paid him per appearance.

One casino in Las Vegas flagged unusual activity. Another account showed day trading patterns that lost money on 70% of positions. The DJ payments came through shell companies, raising questions about whether those were real gigs or just money laundering disguised as entertainment income.

The Investor Problem

Investors thought they were funding an NFT marketplace. They got monthly updates claiming development was on track. Meanwhile, the founder was liquidating their capital. Some LPs found out only after the money dried up and the project went silent. A few tried to claw funds back through lawyers. Most just took the loss.

The SEC hasn't filed charges yet, but investigators are examining whether this was outright theft or negligent misuse of investor capital. The distinction matters legally, though for the people who funded this, the end result is the same: their money is gone.
