Over just two months in 2026, the global crypto ATM network shrank dramatically, with over 10,000 machines vanishing from the streets. The leading cause was an upheaval in the U.S. market, where regulatory pressure and financial setbacks hit the industry hard. Bitcoin Depot, North America's biggest crypto kiosk operator, abruptly ceased operations, pulling nearly 9,000 machines offline almost overnight.

The Sharp Decline in Numbers

On May 1, 2026, the globe counted 38,708 crypto ATMs. By July 8, that number nosedived to 27,945 a staggering drop of 10,763 machines in just 68 days. The United States bore the brunt of this contraction, shedding about 10,000 ATMs and falling from 30,247 units in late March to around 20,005 by early July. This wasn’t a gradual dip; it was a steep plunge concentrated heavily in one region.

Earlier in 2026, the U.S. market showed slight growth, reaching a peak of 31,042 machines in March. But by April, numbers started dipping, signaling a brewing crisis. That mild decline accelerated dramatically the moment Bitcoin Depot filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 18, signaling the largest single withdrawal of crypto kiosks the industry had ever seen.

Underpinning Challenges

Bitcoin Depot’s collapse was part of a larger story of regulatory crackdowns and financial strain. The U.S. crackdown included outright bans in some states, plus stricter compliance rules that made operating these kiosks less viable. The European Union’s MiCA framework introduced tougher regulations too, adding to the hurdles.

Fraud losses severely hurt confidence. The FBI reported over $388 million lost to crypto-related scams in 2025, which led to tougher transaction limits. Operators found their margins squeezed, undermining the business model that had driven rapid expansion just years before.

This development contrasts with the crypto sector’s generally bullish narrative. While trading platforms like Robinhood continue to attract on-chain deposits, physical kiosks have hit a wall, shifting the space of crypto access away from cash-to-crypto services.
