Lawson is pushing stablecoin payments into actual retail checkout lines. The Japanese convenience store chain will run two trials this month at Tokyo locations, letting customers scan wallet barcodes directly through existing POS registers instead of fumbling with separate hardware or QR displays.
The first test kicks off August 6 at Lawson Takanawa Gateway City, where invited shoppers using HashPort Wallet can pay with JPYC, a yen-backed stablecoin. Four days later, on August 17, a second group tries it at Lawson Gate City Osaki Atrium with MetaMask, testing USDC, USDT, or JPYC. The setup routes payment data through Canal Payment Services' PAYTREE gateway, which exchanges settlement info with the wallet provider and confirms the transaction in seconds.
Skipping the extra terminals
What matters here is simplicity. Lawson ditched the clunky approach. Instead of dedicated payment machines or printed QR codes cluttering registers, checkout staff just scan the barcode that pops up in a customer's wallet app, the same way they'd scan a loyalty card. The existing POS system handles it. No new hardware to install, train staff on, or maintain.
The company wants to see three things work smoothly. First, transaction speed how long does a stablecoin payment actually take at the register compared to card swipes. Second, whether the POS integrates cleanly with digital wallets without breaking checkout flow. Third, whether store operations run like normal, meaning no bottlenecks in settlement or reconciliation at end of day.
Lawson's approach mirrors what other retailers and payment networks are quietly testing across Asia. The convenience store model makes sense for pilots, since locations like Lawson see hundreds of small transactions daily and staff already handle multiple payment types. If stablecoin checkout works at scale here, it becomes a blueprint for expanding to franchises across the network.
According to Lawson's announcement, the company will evaluate whether the technology suits wider retail deployment after these August tests wrap. No timeline for rolling this out to all stores yet, but the trials signal management is serious about exploring the tech beyond corporate press releases.
