Apple pulled Telegram from the App Store for hours, then put it back. The messaging app had violated Apple's child sexual abuse material policies, and once Telegram removed the offending content and banned the user responsible, the platform was restored.
Gram token dropped 6.4% on the news, falling from $1.41 to $1.32 before climbing back to around $1.40. The crypto asset tied to Telegram's ecosystem recovered most of its losses within hours. Telegram itself joked about the scare on X: "Reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated," complete with an apple emoji.
Telegram said it removed 337,900 CSAM-related groups and channels throughout 2026 alone. The company also handled 29,640 removals in 2025 based on reports from organizations like the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. In its response to Apple, Telegram questioned whether the same enforcement standard gets applied to other apps on the App Store, linking to its public safety overview page that documents the platform's moderation work.
The incident adds another layer to Telegram's legal troubles. Founder Pavel Durov is currently facing separate proceedings in Russia, Australia, and France, with regulators scrutinizing the platform's content moderation practices and its role in facilitating illegal activity.
