IOTA flipped the switch on Starfish, a completely rebuilt consensus engine that replaces Mysticeti and fundamentally changes how the network validates transactions. The mainnet went live in April via protocol version 24, and the shift wasn't cosmetic. The network now runs on a directed acyclic graph model designed specifically to handle the chaos of real-world trade infrastructure where connectivity breaks, validators lag, and everything still needs to work.

How the plumbing actually works

The old system required every node to stay in sync before moving forward. Starfish decouples that. The chain keeps rolling even when some validators fall behind, and those validators catch up on their own schedule without dragging the entire network with them. Three mechanisms lock this together: cordial dissemination spreads data across nodes, Reed-Solomon encoding preserves transaction records even when pieces go missing, and Data Availability Certificates provide cryptographic proof the data is actually retrievable. There's also a new push pacemaker and separation between metadata and payloads.

The early results speak loudly. Outbound recovery requests dropped roughly tenfold compared to the old engine. Tail latency for commits fell noticeably, and variance stayed low even when network conditions got rough. Ships in the middle of the ocean, port systems with spotty connections, supply chains spanning continents, these are the scenarios Starfish was built to handle.

Why IOTA is chasing trade documents instead of payment rails

The real target is TWIN, the Trade Worldwide Information Network. A single container ship carries goods backed by thousands of documents, certificates of origin, bills of lading, most still managed manually or through broken digital silos. Tokenizing these on a network that actually tolerates variable connectivity makes them tradeable, verifiable, and fast to move. IOTA isn't competing to be faster Bitcoin. It's building the rails for physical goods to move as frictionlessly as digital assets.

The mainnet data shows recovery requests down tenfold, latency compressed, and stability holding under stress. Network participants are already running the upgrade.
