"This is a big deal for traders eager to get in on tokens at inception," said one market participant reacting to Coinbase's latest feature. The exchange has rolled out a "Launches" tab within its decentralized exchange platform, enabling users to discover and trade tokens on Base and Solana chains immediately after they go live onchain. This approach bypasses the traditional waiting period for tokens to be listed on centralized markets, offering swift access to emerging assets.
The "Launches" tab operates through Coinbase’s built-in DEX, which routes trades directly to onchain liquidity pools. According to Coinbase, this setup allows trading of the most popular and trending tokens moments after launch, supported by data and risk signals visible to traders. However, use of this feature requires a self-custody wallet, and it’s not yet available in all regions, though the exchange has not clarified the full scope of accessibility.
Coinbase’s move reflects its ongoing push to expand onchain trading capabilities. It previously integrated Base, its Ethereum Layer 2 solution, into the DEX infrastructure and later added support for Solana tokens. This expansion accelerated after the acquisition of Vector, a Solana-based trading platform, whose team and token analytics have been merged into Coinbase’s DEX to streamline token listings. Vector’s expertise in tracking memecoins and social trading apps now supports Coinbase’s efforts to compete with dedicated launchpad and memecoin venues.
Details around how sufficient liquidity is determined for token availability remain sparse. At a December presentation, Coinbase indicated that tokens with enough liquidity would be tradeable but did not provide explicit thresholds. The exchange also has not specified which app interfaces the new tab is integrated into or offered a full list of supported locations. This feature positions Coinbase as one of the first major US exchanges to offer near-instant token trading on emerging chains, marking a notable step in its DeFi ambitions.
