September 9 marks the end of Coinbase's institutional options trading. The exchange is moving all International Exchange clients to Deribit, the world's largest crypto options venue, in a single coordinated shift that will pause trading for roughly 30 minutes. Every open order gets canceled. Positions settle at mark price, then reopen on Deribit using that same reference level, so no one takes a gap hit in the transition.
The move consolidates a fragmented market. Institutional traders juggling multiple venues will now execute options exclusively through Deribit after September 9. Open positions flip over automatically. Margin requirements and settlement mechanics carry across. For shops that built workflows around Coinbase's options desk, the plumbing changes but the mechanics stay intact.
This isn't Coinbase abandoning derivatives entirely. It's Coinbase admitting Deribit runs options better at scale. Rather than fight for scraps in a space dominated by one player, the exchange is handing off the wheel and keeping retail crypto services intact on its main platform.
