August 4, 2026. Coinbase just flipped the switch on perpetual futures for WTI and Brent crude. No expiry dates, no monthly rollovers, no traditional commodity desk. Just 24/7 trading in a crypto-native wrapper that lets traders hold positions indefinitely.
The contracts settle in USDC, Coinbase's dollar-pegged stablecoin, keeping liquidity flowing even when oil markets sleep. Funding fees replace the roll mechanics that have governed commodity trading for decades. Traders pay or receive these fees continuously rather than closing out and reopening contracts every month.
There is a catch. Access is limited to eligible non-US traders. American users cannot touch them, a restriction that reflects how crypto exchanges have navigated leveraged derivatives in a regulatory minefield. The product itself becomes a referendum on how Washington and legacy exchanges like the CME think perpetual futures should live under U.S. law.
That regulatory tension is the real story here. The CME, which has dominated oil futures for decades, is locked in a dispute with the CFTC over how open-ended contracts should be classified and supervised. Coinbase launching this product is not just a derivatives expansion. It is a direct challenge to the old guard at a moment when the rules around perpetual futures remain unsettled.
The move also broadens Coinbase's derivatives footprint at a time when crypto exchanges are racing to capture commodity trading flows. Unlike traditional oil futures, which expire on a set date and force traders to roll into new contracts, perpetuals have no such deadline. A trader can sit in the same position for months or years, paying or collecting funding fees along the way.
Coinbase says the design choice keeps the order book active outside normal market hours. With no expiration forcing traders to act, the market can remain liquid even when U.S. oil markets are closed. That is the pitch, anyway. Whether it works depends on whether enough traders outside the U.S. actually want to trade oil through a stablecoin settlement layer.
