Ripple just backed Zilo and Licuido in a push to wire together the missing pieces of institutional tokenization. The two deals stack transfer agency, issuance, trading, and collateral infrastructure onto the XRP Ledger, turning it from a payments rail into something that looks more like a functioning capital markets platform.

The real problem these investments solve is basic. Right now, institutions sit on collateral that doesn't move. Settlement takes days. Moving assets between lending and trading use cases requires jumping through compliance hoops that weren't built for on-chain speed. Zilo handles the regulated recordkeeping side, keeping investor records clean as fund ownership moves onto blockchain. Licuido sits on top, running the actual market, letting fund shares and other traditional instruments trade and settle atomically through XRPL.

From Token to Utility

Nigel Khakoo, Ripple's senior vice president of trading and markets, spelled it out plainly: "Tokenization of assets is only the starting point. The real value lies in what can be done with a token, including buying, selling, and settling trades instantly, or using it as collateral to borrow, lend, or post margin." That's the gap Ripple sees. A tokenized asset sitting idle isn't worth much. One that can whip through a lending market or collateral cascade is worth building infrastructure for.

Zilo's angle is regulated fund administration for asset managers and custodians. It keeps compliant investor records as share classes go onchain, handling lending and collateral moves without abandoning the regulatory framework institutions need. Licuido takes that regulated foundation and layers on the market mechanics, managing issuance, distribution, and execution with atomic settlement built into the ledger itself.

The strategy connects to a broader bet that tokenized assets move from curiosity to working capital. Idle collateral and slow settlement cost institutional money. A platform that lets fund shares trade and serve as collateral in the same environment, instantly, cuts friction. That's the utility Ripple is building toward.
