Coinbase just handed UK customers something unusual: round-the-clock access to nearly 4,000 American stocks, five days a week. Starting August 6, eligible Brits can trade US equities commission-free with positions as small as £1. The catch? You're managing your entire portfolio crypto, stocks, cash from a single app.
One App for Everything
The service works like this. Fund your account in British pounds or USDC, then pick from roughly 4,000 conventional US shares. Fractional ownership means you don't need thousands to start. Coinbase One members who trade in USDC earn uncapped rewards. Access rolls out in stages across the UK, so not everyone gets it simultaneously.
This isn't tokenized stocks. Those blockchain-wrapped versions might come later, but for now you're buying actual equities through traditional brokerage plumbing. Dividend rights and extended trading hours could arrive when Coinbase launches tokenized shares, though that's still on the roadmap.
The Bigger Picture: Everything Exchanges Are Real Now
Coinbase is copying what works elsewhere. Robinhood expanded into crypto, Kraken and Gemini moved into tokenized equities. Every platform wants the same thing: trap your entire net worth in one ecosystem.
The UK push is just one move. Same day, Coinbase Australia launched perpetual futures for wholesale investors. Up to 50x use across 150+ contracts covering crypto, equities, and commodities under an Australian Financial Services Licence. Different markets, different products, same strategy.
Coinbase received regulatory approval for UK stock trading last month. The company's building its version of the all-in-one financial app, betting that customers who already hold Bitcoin won't want to open another app for Apple stock.
