Zcash just flipped the switch on its Ironwood upgrade, a move many weren’t expecting so soon after uncovering a serious vulnerability in its previous privacy layer, Orchard. The upgrade introduces a fresh shielded pool that clamps down on risks tied to the old system and allows the network to independently verify that no extra ZEC slips out unchecked.

Security Flaw Sparks Swift Action

Back in late May, security researcher Taylor Hornby privately alerted the Zcash team about a critical issue in the zero-knowledge proof system behind Orchard. This flaw, while never proven to have been exploited, cast doubt on the ability to fully verify the integrity of private transactions and the total circulating supply. Because Orchard transactions keep amounts hidden, outside observers couldn’t be absolutely sure counterfeit coins weren’t created.

Ironwood’s New Protocol and Its Safeguards

The Ironwood upgrade, activated at block height 3,428,143, stops new funds from entering Orchard altogether. Instead, any ZEC leaving Orchard must go through a protocol-enforced "turnstile" before entering Ironwood. This turnstile sets a hard limit ensuring the pool can’t pay out more coins than it receives, creating a verifiable boundary between the two pools. Ironwood also comes with a corrected version of the Orchard protocol, plus its own note commitment tree, nullifier set, and transaction records, all independently audited and formally verified before launch.

Unlike some upgrades requiring users to set up new wallets, Ironwood keeps the same receiver structure as Orchard. Wallets compatible with Orchard can smoothly handle Ironwood transactions, though funds inside Orchard do need to be manually migrated using supported wallets like ZODL version 3.8.0.

This fix arrives as the crypto world grapples with increasing scrutiny over privacy technologies and supply verification. It also highlights the importance of solid security audits and rapid response to vulnerabilities. The upgrade keeps Zcash’s shielded pool feature intact but now adds a much-needed layer of transparency and defense against unseen exploits.
