Just weeks after pledging to grant Ukraine the rights to produce Patriot missile systems domestically, Donald Trump has stepped back from that commitment. During a recent cabinet meeting at Camp David, he admitted giving away such advanced defense technology is a "hard thing to give away." This reversal caught many off guard, considering the initial announcement was made early July during a NATO summit in Turkey, where Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared to agree on this significant support move.
The US has supplied Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine since late 2022, playing a key role in helping Kyiv defend against Russian missile and drone attacks. However, manufacturing these systems locally is no simple feat. Experts say even if the license had been granted, setting up full-scale production would take at least a year, maybe several, due to the complex nature of the technology and the massive challenges of building the necessary supply chains and factories from scratch.
By pulling back, Trump has effectively paused any progress on such a timeline. No new plans or alternative support measures have been announced as of late July. This development carries weight beyond defense circles. It impacts defense stocks, adds uncertainty to geopolitical risk pricing, and ripples through crypto markets that react to broader macroeconomic shifts.
