Telegram returned to Apple and Google's app stores within a week, but the delisting exposed how quickly governments can disrupt 900 million users and the blockchain services built on top of them. India ordered the removal in mid-June to stop leaked NEET exam papers from circulating through Telegram channels. By June 23, both stores had restored the app.
The Indian government invoked Section 69A of its Information Technology Act, a legal hammer that lets authorities block digital content for national security reasons. This time the target was NEET-UG, one of India's most politically charged standardized tests. Officials didn't just remove Telegram from app stores either. They implemented network-level blocks that disrupted service even for users who already had the app installed on their phones.
Why Telegram's outage matters beyond messaging
Telegram isn't just a chat platform anymore. The company built its own blockchain, The Open Network, and launched Toncoin as a native token. That move turned Telegram into a direct gateway to crypto services and mini-apps. Any disruption to Telegram's distribution becomes a disruption to TON-based projects and the broader ecosystem relying on Telegram's reach. A week-long blackout might seem short, but it's long enough to send users scrambling to alternatives.
This wasn't Telegram's first dance with app store gatekeepers. Apple pulled the app briefly in February 2018 over content concerns. That situation resolved quickly, but it set a precedent. App store operators respond to government pressure. They don't fight it.
The pattern emerging
The speed of Telegram's restoration, roughly seven days from delisting to reinstatement, suggests these disruptions are becoming routine friction rather than existential threats. Governments test their power. Tech companies comply. Service resumes. Rinse, repeat. But each cycle normalizes the idea that a single country's regulatory order can temporarily sever 900 million people from a platform and the services running on it. For crypto projects betting their infrastructure on Telegram, that's a risk that can't be ignored.
