Strategy shifted 1,030 Bitcoin worth roughly $66.14 million on August 5, just two days after the company confirmed its largest asset sale in weeks. On-chain monitors spotted the movement, sparking immediate questions about whether the firm is accelerating its Bitcoin monetization strategy. Strategy's SEC filings show it held 842,138 Bitcoin as of early August, valued at over $63.5 billion at an average acquisition cost of $75,419 per coin.
The timing matters. Between July 27 and August 2, Strategy sold 1,638 Bitcoin for $104.73 million in net proceeds, averaging $63,957 per coin. The company allocated half the funds toward preferred stock dividends and the other half toward repurchasing its own STRC preferred shares. A separate $81.2 million share buyback happened the same week. This marks Strategy's fourth Bitcoin sale in 2026, totaling 5,258 coins liquidated so far.
The Monetization Framework at Work
Strategy's board blessed a Bitcoin monetization framework back in June that permits the company to sell holdings for three purposes: building cash reserves, paying dividends, and funding buybacks. The framework sets no minimum or maximum sale thresholds, giving executives discretion on timing and volume. Michael Saylor's company isn't hiding these moves each transaction lands in SEC filings but the recent cluster of activity signals a more aggressive approach to converting digital assets into shareholder returns.
Bitcoin hovered near $64,387 when Strategy announced these transactions. The company's stock climbed 2.9% on the news, while broader confidence around large corporate Bitcoin holders like institutional investors continues reshaping custody patterns.
Miner MARA's Own Move
Mining firm Marathon Digital also made headlines the same day, transferring 6,000 Bitcoin worth approximately $384.6 million to Two Prime, a custody partner the company already works with for managed Bitcoin strategies. Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain flagged both movements. Neither company confirmed these as outright sales, though the scale raised eyebrows across the sector. MARA shares stayed essentially flat after the announcement.
Strategy's approach differs from pure hodling. The company treats Bitcoin like treasury reserves for a public corporation, deploying gains strategically to reward shareholders. Whether this accelerates further likely depends on Bitcoin price momentum and cash management priorities in the coming months.
