Solana's network just handled 169.9 million transactions in a single day. That's the highest daily count ever recorded on the blockchain, hitting the milestone on August 4 according to Blockworks data. The number filters out validator consensus messages, so it reflects real user and application activity, not just network overhead.
What makes this spike interesting isn't just the volume. Six days before hitting that record, Solana pushed through a network upgrade that expanded block capacity by 66 percent. The upgrade, called SIMD-0286, raised the compute limit per block from 60 million to 100 million units. Block times stayed at 400 milliseconds. Speed didn't suffer. And developers filled that new space almost immediately.
The math behind the upgrade
On July 29, Solana activated the upgrade at the start of a new epoch, the two-day cycle where validator duties rotate. The change was the largest throughput expansion the network has shipped since launch. Jito Labs engineer Lucas Bruder designed it, and the whole thing only became possible after XDP, a kernel-bypass networking method that lets validators skip parts of the operating system, secured 70 percent of staked SOL.
Compute units measure processing work. More compute per block means more transactions can fit. The old 60 million cap was already straining under real traffic. Within days of the increase, the network proved there was plenty of demand waiting on the other side.
Looking at weekly data, transaction counts have now surpassed the peaks from early February and sit roughly 55 percent above April's lows, when the network hit its slowest stretch of the year.
