SK Hynix, the leading supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), has announced that demand driven by artificial intelligence is reshaping the memory chip market, potentially ending its long history of sharp ups and downs. The South Korean company, which holds 50% to 70% of the HBM market, has already sold out its entire memory chip production for 2026, signaling sustained pressure on supply.

CEO Kwak Noh-jung described the current shortage as the worst the global memory chip sector has seen, with demand expected to outpace supply well into 2027 and possibly beyond 2030. To meet this challenge, SK Hynix plans to double its production capacity in the next five years, although feedback from customers suggests even that expansion may not suffice.

The surge in demand primarily stems from HBM chips, which are critical components for Nvidia GPUs used in data centers training large language models. SK Hynix is the top supplier of the current HBM3E generation and is accelerating development of the upcoming HBM4 chips.

Financial and Market Impact

SK Hynix set a new record with an operating profit of 47 trillion won in 2025, nearly doubling from the previous year. Its Nasdaq listing in July 2026 further boosted confidence, with shares jumping almost 13% on the first day.

Expansion plans include potential wafer fabrication facilities in the US, aiming to solidify the company’s position amid a rapidly evolving market. The rise of generative AI since 2023 has transformed HBM from a niche product into a core technology, creating structural demand shifts that challenge the traditional boom-and-bust cycles typical for semiconductors.

Competitors like Samsung and Micron have increased investments in advanced memory technologies, but SK Hynix's head start and close ties with Nvidia give it a significant edge. Market observers will be watching the company’s capacity growth closely, as any delays could worsen chip shortages and further concentrate pricing power.
