Situational Awareness, Leo Aschenbrenner’s AI-focused hedge fund managing around $20 billion, recently offloaded its leveraged AI public equity positions to Citadel. The transaction, finalized near the end of July 2026, allowed the fund to reduce risk exposure while preserving its most valuable private investment a massive stake in Anthropic valued at roughly $965 billion. That single holding makes up 20% of the fund's assets, about $4 billion.
Shedding Risk while Clinging to Private Gold
The fund’s leveraged bets on publicly traded AI stocks had amplified returns during the sector’s rapid rise but posed considerable risk if markets turned sour. Citadel’s purchase came after a competitive bidding process that gave Situational Awareness a way to exit these vulnerable positions safely. Meanwhile, the fund maintained its unlevered public holdings and private assets, most notably Anthropic.
Anthropic’s valuation exploded from around $60 billion in early 2025 to nearly $1 trillion by mid-2026, delivering approximately 15-fold gains in just over a year. This growth underpins Situational Awareness's reported 270% net returns as of May 2026. However, unlike liquid publicly traded stocks, Anthropic remains private, making those gains largely illiquid on paper. While this shields the fund from daily market fluctuations, it also limits quick cash out options.
The use Challenge in AI Investment
Having left OpenAI under controversial circumstances, Aschenbrenner founded Situational Awareness betting AI would disrupt economies faster than expected. Leveraged public equity positions magnified returns but also exposed the fund to sharp downturns. Citadel’s intervention helped stabilize the situation by absorbing these risky holdings. This move echoes broader challenges in the AI investment space, where private valuations skyrocket but liquidity constraints and market volatility present constant tension.
The deal marks a significant moment in AI trading strategies, with major players like Citadel taking on leveraged public equities just as growth narratives shift and market conditions fluctuate.
