Shopify’s Q1 2026 data shows AI-referred orders jumping nearly 13 times compared to last year. Sessions directed by AI chatbots grew over 8 times. But these AI visitors aren’t just casual; they convert at almost 50% higher rates than organic search users and spend 14% more per order. These numbers mark a breakthrough AI is now a leading force in how shoppers discover products online.

Still, Shopify’s data focuses on referral attribution. The AI suggests, humans decide and complete the purchase themselves. This differs from fully autonomous purchases, where AI independently executes transactions. Shoppers get AI recommendations and then take the final step manually.

Shopify calls this effect 'journey compression.' AI search condenses discovery and consideration into a speedy, smooth interaction, pushing more users directly to product pages over 50% of AI referrals start there versus 20% for organic search. This pre-qualification means AI referrals convert better, outperforming organic SEO in 23 out of 25 retail categories by an average 56% margin.

However, Checkout.com’s recent survey reflects a different reality. Autonomous AI-powered purchases, where AI itself completes the payment, are still tiny just 3% of transactions in the US and UK. Despite 89% of merchants prepping for AI commerce, actual AI agent usage remains limited. Consumer trust lags behind too: the Product.ai report reveals that 86% of buyers double-check AI advice, and 42% won't trust AI for purchases over $25.

This gap between potential and practice drives industry efforts to improve. Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts, built on the Universal Commerce Protocol co-created with Google, aim to enable AI-driven sales directly on AI platforms. Yet, true agentic commerce is still taking shape.
