Sequoia Capital just wrote a billion-dollar check for nuclear energy. That move alone signals how much the power game has shifted in two years.

Valar Atomics closed a $1 billion Series B round led by Sequoia, hitting a $6 billion valuation after money. The funding included a $200 million credit facility from Erebor and other lenders, bringing the total to $1.2 billion. The startup, founded in 2023 by CEO Isaiah Taylor, is now ready to move from testing to mass production of small modular reactors.

The company builds high-temperature gas-cooled SMRs using TRISO fuel and helium coolant. Think of them as compact nuclear reactors running on durable fuel particles encased in ceramic layers, cooled by an inert gas instead of water. The design trades water cooling for simplicity and safety. More importantly, it's standardizable. Valar clusters these reactors into what it calls "gigasites" to power AI data centers, industrial plants, and hydrogen production facilities that need constant baseload electricity without grid dependency.

From test to factory

In July 2026, Valar hit the milestone that made investors sit up. Its reactor generated enough power to run an Nvidia AI chip. The Ward 250 test reactor, backed by the US Department of Energy, is expected to achieve criticality later, meaning it sustains a controlled nuclear chain reaction.

The fundraising pace has been brutal. Valar raised $130 million in Series A during November 2025. Earlier this year, another $450 million followed at a $2 billion valuation. Now, months later, its valuation has tripled. Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire joins the board as part of the deal.

AI data centers are power monsters. Training large language models and running inference at scale demands consistent round-the-clock electricity that solar and wind simply cannot provide. Battery storage doesn't cut it for the loads we're talking about. Nuclear fits the gap perfectly. It runs 24/7, produces minimal carbon, and can handle the density of power AI infrastructure needs without sprawling across thousands of acres.

The timing matters. Energy costs have become a hard constraint for AI companies. A megawatt of electricity can mean the difference between profitability and bankruptcy at scale. Nuclear avoids both the volatility of fossil fuels and the intermittency of renewables. For venture investors betting on AI dominance, backing Valar is a bet that whoever solves the power problem wins the AI race.
