Wyoming’s Senator Cynthia Lummis sharply rebuked Democratic senators on Wednesday for stalling the Clarity Act, a bill designed to set clear crypto regulations. Speaking directly on the Senate floor, Lummis highlighted the bipartisan effort that shaped the legislation but expressed frustration over the ongoing delays.
The Clarity Act, which aims to establish a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency market, secured strong bipartisan backing in the House last year but has faced a deadlock in the Senate throughout 2026. Some Democrats continue to raise concerns about the bill's current language, even after nearly a year of negotiations. Lummis stated, “After 11 months of giving nearly everything that was asked of us, I genuinely don’t know what else my Democrat colleagues need before we act.”
Pressure Builds as August Recess Nears
Lawmakers are pushing to pass the bill before Congress breaks for August recess. Major banks, industry players, and politicians largely support the legislation, but a faction of Democrats last week publicly declared the bill insufficient in its current form. The updated Clarity Act addresses ethics issues by prohibiting government officials and their families from promoting or issuing cryptocurrencies, a move intended to boost trust.
Republicans, with Lummis as a vocal leader known as the “Bitcoin Senator,” hope to secure bipartisan approval this week. The bill's passage would mark a significant step toward clearer rules in crypto regulation, an area complicated by tensions such as the banking lobby’s worries over stablecoin yields. Meanwhile, Block recently lent its support to the bill, signaling strong industry interest as the clock ticks down.
