SBI Holdings has revamped one of its subsidiaries to focus exclusively on the Canton Network, signaling a clear expansion of its institutional blockchain efforts beyond just Ripple and the XRP Ledger.
On June 22, SBI Security Solutions officially changed its name to SBI Digital Practice Co. Ltd. This newly branded entity now heads SBI’s Canton Network operations, handling everything from developing infrastructure to creating financial applications tailored for institutions. The subsidiary stays under SBI’s full ownership and operates out of Roppongi, Tokyo, led by Ryo Shimotsu.
Deepening Blockchain Reach with Canton
The Canton Network already connects over 600 institutions and supports assets exceeding $6 trillion. Its ability to facilitate tokenized U.S. Treasuries offers SBI a direct link to the American market a significant step for Japan’s push into global blockchain finance. SBI is betting that more financial products and transactions will transition onto blockchain platforms. The new subsidiary aims to help banks and other financial institutions navigate this shift while staying compliant with varying regulations worldwide.
SBI’s move includes a role as a Super Validator within Canton, which involves critical network functions like transaction verification.
Despite these developments, SBI’s expanded blockchain footprint doesn't mean it’s moving away from Ripple. The longstanding partnership forged with Ripple since 2016, particularly through SBI Ripple Asia, remains intact. This joint venture drives Ripple’s payment infrastructure expansion in Asia-Pacific and continues to develop services, including XRP Ledger-based token issuance platforms for businesses.
The creation of SBI Digital Practice adds Canton Network to SBI’s portfolio, alongside existing projects on the XRP Ledger, Solana, stablecoins, and tokenized securities. The company’s broad blockchain involvement reflects a strategic push to use multiple networks to serve institutional clients effectively.
