Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, aims to roll out its crypto custody and trading platform by December 1 this year. This move aligns with the approaching implementation of Russia's new crypto regulation set to take effect on September 1, with stricter rules coming into force by July 2027.
Government Rules Narrow Crypto Trading Options
The updated regulatory framework restricts public exchange trading to cryptocurrencies that have a market capitalization exceeding $64 billion. This high threshold limits which digital assets can be accessible to the broader public within Russia’s regulated crypto environment.
Previously, Sberbank piloted bitcoin bonds and introduced bitcoin-backed lending services in partnership with the mining firm Intelion Data, building experience in integrating crypto assets with traditional banking products.
Crypto Without Compromise
Building a secure custody system is a key step for Sberbank, as it positions itself for a major role in Russia’s tightening crypto market. The bank’s intention is to offer institutional-grade depository services and trading infrastructure, providing clients with safer and regulated access to crypto assets that meet the high market cap requirement.
This news comes as the Russian crypto industry adjusts to a more controlled environment. Sberbank’s developments coincide with its earlier goals to integrate crypto trading by 2026, reinforcing its leading position in the domestic crypto banking sector.
As the market landscape shifts, Sberbank's project could impact how Russian users engage with large-scale cryptocurrencies while navigating new compliance demands.
