Sberbank is moving forward with plans to roll out a regulated cryptocurrency trading platform by December 1, 2026. This initiative includes setting up a digital depository designed to record ownership, manage transfers, and handle transactions that occur off the main blockchain.
The development comes amid the recent approval of Russia’s bill on digital currency and digital rights by the State Duma. The legislation, now headed to the Federation Council and awaiting the president’s signature, will regulate exchanges, brokers, custodians, and depositories, establishing a clear legal framework for crypto activities.
Alexander Vedyakhin, First Deputy Chairman of Sberbank’s Management Board, explained that the digital depository will track clients’ cryptocurrency rights and manage wallet transactions, helping fulfill currency transfer orders within the new legal framework. Sberbank is actively building the infrastructure necessary for licensed crypto trading, aligning with anticipated laws currently under parliamentary consideration.
The bill aims to unify Russia’s fragmented crypto regulations, which currently involve separate rules for ownership, mining, trading, and overseas use. It also addresses restrictions on local crypto payments and includes provisions related to tax, anti-money laundering, and digital financial assets. This framework is especially key as Russian enterprises face challenges with cross-border transactions under ongoing sanctions.
Once operational, Sberbank’s platform will provide a state-compliant gateway into the crypto market, supporting transactions within regulated boundaries. The bank’s Moscow-listed shares under tickers SBER and SBERP could see increased investor interest as the project progresses.
By the end of 2026, Sberbank expects to have both the trading infrastructure and digital depository fully functional, marking a significant step in Russia’s crypto landscape.
