That’s the concern Samson Mow, a Bitcoin developer and CEO of JAN3, has raised about rushing Bitcoin’s move to post-quantum cryptographic signatures. While the looming threat of quantum computers breaking current cryptography is real, Mow warns that an early switch could open Bitcoin up to attacks from today's classical computers.
Recently, AI research from Anthropic revealed new vulnerabilities in weakened cryptographic algorithms, adding a fresh twist to the debate. Mow points out that hurrying to replace Bitcoin’s tried-and-tested ECDSA and Schnorr signature schemes with post-quantum alternatives might ironically make the network more vulnerable right now. In his words, it’s like making Bitcoin safe against quantum computers only to get “pwned” by regular computers.
He emphasizes that Bitcoin’s development has always favored slow, steady progress, carefully weighing risks. The network should only shift to post-quantum signatures once quantum computers pose a genuine, practical threat. Premature changes risk creating more immediate security gaps than the quantum threat itself.
Mow also praised ongoing work by Blockstream’s cryptographers, noting that hash-based signature schemes might offer a safer path compared to lattice-based alternatives like HAWK, due to having a smaller attack surface. His caution reflects a broader philosophy: improving Bitcoin's security without compromising what already works.
As the crypto world watches, balancing innovation with security remains a tightrope walk.
