Igor Runets, the founder of BitRiver, Russia’s largest crypto mining company, was moved from house arrest to pretrial detention by a Moscow court on July 29. Authorities accuse him of involvement in a fraud case worth over 1 billion rubles, roughly $13 million. The Zamoskvoretsky District Court has ordered Runets to remain in detention for at least two months while the investigation unfolds.

BitRiver is a notable player in the crypto mining sector, and this development has sent ripples through the Russian crypto community. The case highlights increased scrutiny of crypto-related businesses amid regulatory tightening. Earlier this year, crypto fraud losses reportedly surged by 66%, according to an FBI report, signaling growing risks in the market.

Runets’s detention comes amid broader legal challenges faced by crypto entrepreneurs in Russia and globally. Meanwhile, crypto exchanges continue to expand offerings, with perpetual futures open interest surpassing $2 billion in recent months, showing that despite regulatory hurdles, market activity remains solid.
