On August 1, Ripple plans to unlock 1 billion XRP tokens, valued at approximately $1.1 billion. This monthly event raises fresh concerns about possible selling pressure in the market. As of July 24, XRP was trading at $1.10, down 1.76% over the day, with a 24-hour trading volume of $1.05 billion, according to CoinMarketCap data.
Monthly XRP Unlocks and Circulating Supply Growth
Since 2017, Ripple Labs has maintained a predictable schedule of unlocking 1 billion XRP from its escrow account on the first day of each month. With the circulating supply standing at roughly 62.46 billion XRP at the time of writing, this August release will temporarily increase the supply by about 1.6%. Such an increase can intensify downward pressure on price if a significant portion is sold on the open market.
Re-locking Practices Mitigate Supply Inflation
Despite receiving 1 billion XRP monthly, Ripple often locks back 60% to 80% of these tokens into new escrow contracts. For example, in 2026, the company has already re-locked 700 million XRP each month, limiting the net increase in circulating supply to about 300 million tokens. Should this pattern continue, the effective supply inflation in August may only be around 0.48%, somewhat easing worries about large-scale dumps.
It is also important to note that Ripple’s escrow account holds approximately 32.44 billion XRP, worth over $35.6 billion, as reported by XRPSCAN at the time of publication.
