Ripple's quiet push to become a full-fledged financial institution has involved spending around $4 billion on key acquisitions since 2023. These purchases are not random buys but deliberate steps toward assembling custody, brokerage, treasury, and payment services that banks typically offer.
Starting in May 2023, Ripple acquired Metaco, a Swiss firm specializing in custody technology, for $250 million. This addition gave Ripple a foothold in safekeeping digital assets for major banks worldwide. Shortly after, Ripple bought Standard Custody, which holds a New York trust license, essential for regulated asset management.
The largest deal was Hidden Road, acquired for $1.25 billion, a rapidly growing prime brokerage that now reports revenue has more than tripled post-acquisition and clears over $3 trillion annually. This scale of transaction shows Ripple’s growing muscle in institutional finance, especially with its RLUSD stablecoin integrated as collateral for cross-margining.
Ripple didn’t stop there. It added Rail to handle stablecoin-powered payment rails and GTreasury, a treasury management platform used by major corporations like American Airlines and Volvo to manage $12.5 trillion in corporate cash flows annually, for about $1 billion. The last piece, Palisade, focuses on XRP-native custody.
Collectively, these acquisitions outline a blueprint for a bank: asset safekeeping, brokerage, clearing, treasury management, and payment settlement. Meanwhile, Ripple’s formal application for a federal bank charter remains under review by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), making these purchases a way to build the bank outside typical regulatory approval.
The financing behind this buying spree came from a $500 million fundraising round led by Fortress, Citadel, Pantera, Galaxy, Brevan Howard, and Marshall Wace. Ripple has also signaled no plans for an IPO, emphasizing its goal to expand through acquisition rather than public listing or selling itself.
This strategy highlights a critical detail: even as the XRP token's price fluctuates, the core businesses Ripple is building focus on fiat, stablecoins, and traditional financial assets. The company’s future does not depend solely on XRP’s success, signaling a pragmatic approach to integrating crypto with established finance.
