Six US politicians have collectively invested more than $6 million in Uber Technologies Inc. this year. The group includes President Donald Trump, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and senators from both parties, among others.
Trump alone holds a $5 million stake in Uber. Pelosi made headlines with her purchase of 200 Uber call options valued between $500,001 and $1 million, striking at $50 and expiring in March 2027. These options were bought when Uber stock traded near $70.
Other lawmakers have taken smaller positions. Colorado’s Senator John Hickenlooper acquired shares worth up to $250,000 in January, when Uber traded around $85. Arkansas’ Senator John Boozman and Oklahoma’s Senator Alan Armstrong both disclosed purchases ranging from $1,000 to $15,000. Washington Representative Dan Newhouse also joined in with a similar-sized investment earlier this month.
Market watchers suggest these political bets are fueled by optimism about Uber’s future growth. Bank of America recently maintained a Buy rating on Uber, forecasting gross bookings hitting $57.3 billion this year and expecting third-quarter bookings to reach $60 billion, up from $58 billion previously. According to TipRanks, 31 analysts have set an average 12-month price target of $108.19 for Uber stock, implying significant upside from current levels.
These moves come as Uber advances in areas like autonomous vehicles and Uber Eats expansions, sectors viewed as key growth drivers. Investors, including policymakers, appear to be positioning themselves ahead of Uber’s August 5 earnings report, anticipating strong performance and further gains.
