OpenAI is killing DALL-E inside ChatGPT. Users have until August 30 to download their saved images before the company shuts down the DALL-E GPT interface completely. That's roughly 30 days to rescue any work still sitting in the old tool.
The dedicated image generation feature that lived within ChatGPT is getting retired. Anyone who's stashed images there needs to grab them before the deadline, or they vanish. The replacement is ChatGPT Images, built on OpenAI's newer gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini models. These arrived back in November 2025, and the company has been nudging users toward them since December.
This shutdown doesn't come out of nowhere. The underlying DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3 model snapshots were already scheduled for deprecation by May 12, 2026 across OpenAI's API. The consumer-facing retirement is just the final piece of a transition OpenAI started months ago. One thing that stays put: custom GPTs that include image generation will keep working.
Why OpenAI is tightening its image stack
The company is consolidating around fewer, more powerful models. The shift ties text and image capabilities tighter together inside ChatGPT instead of maintaining separate dedicated tools. It's a cleaner product architecture, but it also means users lose choice. OpenAI has been quietly mapping different image tiers, like the full gpt-image-1 versus the lighter gpt-image-1-mini, to different subscription levels.
The AI community isn't celebrating how these transitions get handled. Abrupt deprecation notices with compressed timelines erode goodwill fast, especially among power users and developers who've built workflows around specific tools. When someone has to change course anyway, the cost of switching to a competitor drops to nearly zero. That's the opening rivals need.
