Just 1.7% of altcoins with a $50 million market cap and two-year track record outperformed Bitcoin between early 2020 and June 2026. Blockworks Research dug through years of data and found a brutal truth: the altcoin renaissance everyone remembers from 2021 turned out to be a mirage.
The 2021 bubble burst hard
During the 2020-2021 bull run, roughly one in three altcoins beat Bitcoin's returns. Investors felt unstoppable. Then reality arrived. The report found that 86% of those winning altcoins have since lost more than 90% of their value. Out of 187 altcoins that outperformed Bitcoin during that peak season, only OKB held onto its edge over the long haul.
22 coins managed the full distance
Across the entire 2020-2026 stretch, only 22 altcoins stayed ahead of Bitcoin when measured against the same criteria (minimum $50 million market cap). The list reads like a who's who of exchange tokens and layer-one darlings:
- BNB, OKB, GT, LEO, BGB, WBT, MX
- Ethereum, Solana, Tron
- Pancakeswap (CAKE) and a handful of others
The pattern matters more than the names. Exchange-issued tokens dominated the winners list. Solana and Tron proved layer-one chains could survive. Ethereum, despite Bitcoin's dominance in price action, still made the cut. Meanwhile, thousands of projects that promised revolution in 2021 never materialized into gains.
The data doesn't capture every crypto that ever existed, only those that crossed the $50 million market cap threshold at some point. Smaller projects, the ones that truly exploded and crashed, don't appear in these figures. Still, the message is clear: if you bought random altcoins in 2021, the odds were heavily stacked against you.
