Okta has stepped up its game against the rising tide of identity threats by acquiring Permiso Security for $200 million. The Palo Alto startup is known for its advanced detection of risks linked to AI agents, automated bots, and service accounts across cloud systems. This acquisition was announced on July 30 and highlights a growing security concern in crypto and cloud infrastructure.
Permiso’s strength lies in its massive database of over 2,500 detection signals sourced from 70+ identity partners. Their platform uses behavioral analytics to flag unusual identity activity, covering both humans and machines. One standout feature is their AI agent runtime security tool, SandyClaw a sandbox environment that watches AI agents’ behavior before they enter live systems, effectively preventing potential threats.
Ely Kahn, Okta’s Chief Product Officer, emphasized that this deal boosts their ability to provide "full identity threat protection" to companies managing autonomous AI identities. The acquisition is set to close early next year, aligning with Okta’s fiscal calendar, and won’t alter the company’s existing financial outlook.
Why this move matters beyond enterprise IT
With 58% of executives reporting AI-related security incidents or close calls in the past year, Okta is betting on the future where autonomous AI agents become a core part of digital infrastructure but also a prime target for cyberattacks. Permiso’s clients, including Autodesk, already benefit from deep visibility into identity usage across cloud environments a critical layer of defense as identity-based attacks multiply.
Okta’s previous big acquisition was Auth0 in 2021 for about $6.5 billion, focused on developer authentication. This newer purchase targets a far newer threat landscape shaped by AI’s rapid expansion. As AI-powered systems grow more complex, securing non-human identities becomes key to protecting everything from corporate clouds to crypto networks.
