Nvidia has made an extraordinary $5 billion investment in Safe Superintelligence Inc., a company that doesn’t have any products or revenue, and is not planning on launching any soon. This move signals a significant shift in how major tech players are betting on the future of artificial intelligence, focusing on safety rather than immediate commercial gains.

Safe Superintelligence was founded by Ilya Sutskever, who previously served as the chief scientist at OpenAI. After leaving OpenAI in mid-2024, he started this new venture with the intention of advancing AI safety research. The company runs with a small, highly specialized team split between Palo Alto and Tel Aviv, emphasizing deep research over market-ready solutions.

Before Nvidia’s latest funding round, SSI had already secured close to $6 billion from prominent investors such as Greenoaks Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia, and Alphabet. Now valued at $32 billion, SSI’s worth is remarkable given that it explicitly chooses not to develop commercial AI products, focusing instead on the long-term implications of AI development.

Nvidia’s substantial equity injection also grants SSI access to its next-generation Vera Rubin GPU platform, linking the startup’s research capabilities with world-class hardware. This isn’t a first collaboration: Alphabet partnered with SSI back in April 2025, and Nvidia participated in earlier funding rounds prior to this massive wager.

This bold move by Nvidia reveals where some of the largest bets in AI development are being placed: on safety and control. The chipmaker’s commitment shows that the path to powerful AI involves careful oversight and responsible innovation, highlighting an industry trend toward backing projects focused on the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence rather than quick returns.
