Nvidia and SpaceX just announced a joint project that sounds like science fiction but isn't. They're building the Starmind AI1 satellite, a spacecraft that runs serious artificial intelligence workloads from low Earth orbit. The kicker: they're planning a constellation of up to 1 million of them, turning space into a distributed supercomputer.
Each satellite packs 120 kilowatts of average compute power, spiking to 150 kW when needed. The hardware is Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72 system, combining Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs. To power this beast, each unit deploys a solar wingspan stretching 70 meters, roughly two-thirds the length of a Boeing 747. The satellite itself stands 20 meters tall. Data processed on board flows back to Earth through Starlink's laser link network, which already exists, so no new ground infrastructure is needed.
Why this actually works is the math of space. Orbital mechanics gives you consistent, abundant solar energy in sun-synchronous orbit where Starmind satellites operate. The constellation design is also chip-vendor agnostic, meaning future satellite generations can swap in silicon from anyone without rebuilding the whole system. Prototype testing kicks off early 2027, with mass production expected by late 2027.
The compute market is already tight, with AI labs becoming permanent tenants of compute landlords on Earth. Moving workloads to orbit sidesteps terrestrial power constraints and cooling bottlenecks. Neither company has disclosed costs or timeline for full deployment.
