SpaceX just locked in NVIDIA's most powerful space-grade processors for Starmind, its plan to turn satellites into data centers floating above Earth. The partnership pairs SpaceX's commitment to NVIDIA infrastructure with chips that can actually run AI models up there instead of beaming raw data down to ground stations that cost a fortune to operate.
The deal brings NVIDIA's Space-1 platform into SpaceX's orbit. That's the Vera Rubin GPU paired with custom CPUs, all jammed into hardware light and power-efficient enough for satellites. The performance jump is wild, NVIDIA claims, 25 times more AI compute than what an H100 GPU can manage. In practice that means language models running on satellites, not just sensors transmitting back pictures.
SpaceX filed to launch up to one million of these orbital data centers. The FCC still needs to rubber-stamp it. Even without final clearance, the company's betting big. Musk said publicly that SpaceX would build its entire AI infrastructure on NVIDIA platforms going forward, choosing Vera Rubin as the strongest available option available for space work.
The move expands NVIDIA's roster after it first introduced Space-1 in March with launch partners like Axiom Space and Planet Labs. SpaceX wasn't in that original crew but has now become a major player in the space-computing gold rush. Both companies plan to jointly design compute payloads for future satellites, turning this into a long-term engineering bet.
Stock markets reacted fast. SpaceX's parent gained 9.8 percent on the news. NVIDIA rose 2.5 percent, a smaller bump but proof the market sees this as a real revenue stream, not just hype about AI in space.
The regulatory hurdle remains. Launching one million non-geostationary satellites between 500 and higher altitudes needs FCC approval that SpaceX requested back in January. Orbital real estate is getting crowded with mega-constellations from Amazon, OneWeb and others, so expect pushback on radio interference and collision risk. But if Starmind actually launches, processing AI workloads in orbit instead of shipping everything earthside could reshape how space-based data actually gets used.
