The Mount Carmel Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted on July 23 to prohibit cryptocurrency mining and data centers within the town, marking a growing trend of communities pushing back against energy-heavy digital infrastructure. This decision directly responds to concerns from residents about the environmental and social impact these facilities bring.
Communities nationwide have increasingly voiced worries about the high electricity consumption, noise pollution, and water use associated with large-scale crypto mining and data operations. In the nearby Mt. Carmel Township, Pennsylvania, hundreds of locals attended public hearings to oppose proposed data centers. They feared such developments could threaten residential areas, disturb natural surroundings, and alter the rural character of their neighborhoods.
Residents there also demanded stricter zoning laws, wider buffer zones around these facilities, and tougher penalties for violations, arguing that proposed fines were insufficient compared to the financial power of major industry players. Some advocated for temporary moratoriums while regulations undergo review.
Mount Carmel’s move reflects a broader wave of municipal restrictions across the US. For example, New York’s Town of Manlius recently implemented a one-year halt on data centers and commercial crypto mining to address similar issues including rising utility costs and environmental impact. Morgan County in Alabama also approved a temporary freeze on such projects following community backlash over noise and infrastructure strain.
Meanwhile, St. Joseph, Tennessee, has outlawed data centers, AI computing hubs, and crypto mining operations within city limits, highlighting how these concerns extend beyond cryptocurrency to encompass all high-intensity digital infrastructures.
The growing regulatory pushback comes as debates continue nationwide over the sustainability and community impact of these rapidly expanding technologies.
