Matt Prusak walked out of American Bitcoin's president office on August 3. The executive, who also served as interim CFO at the Trump-linked mining firm, is joining Giga Energy as chief business officer and interim CFO, effective immediately. It's a clean break from one of crypto's most politically wired operations.
American Bitcoin, trading as ABTC on Nasdaq, has Eric Trump as co-founder and chief strategy officer. The Trump brothers hold 20% of the company. Prusak's departure stings harder because American Bitcoin isn't exactly desperate for cash, it's sitting on over 8,000 BTC in its corporate treasury. Yet losing your president and interim CFO in one move creates a leadership vacuum that no amount of Bitcoin hoarding can fill.
Why Giga, why now
Giga Energy, based in Houston, doesn't just tinker with Bitcoin mining rigs anymore. The company builds modular power infrastructure and containerized solutions that scale fast, deploying across mining operations and data centers alike. Right now it's developing over 500 MW of AI-capable data center capacity. Historically it's deployed infrastructure supporting more than 6.5 GW of total power capacity. Prusak's résumé, which includes stints at Ionic Digital and US Bitcoin Corp, suggests this hire was strategic, not accidental.
The broader shift tells the real story. American Bitcoin has doubled down on mining, but the industry itself is pivoting. Core Scientific abandoned pure Bitcoin mining to host AI workloads. Hut 8 merged with US Bitcoin Corp to build a diversified compute platform. Power has become the actual moat, not the hash rate.
Giga's modular approach cuts through years of permitting bottlenecks. Instead of building a massive centralized facility that takes forever to get approved, containerized solutions plug into stranded energy assets, flare gas sites, or behind-the-meter locations where conventional grid power isn't viable or costs too much. That flexibility is what traditional data center developers can't match.
The catch is execution. Scaling 500 MW of AI-capable capacity requires serious capital and flawless operations. Prusak's move signals Giga thinks it can pull it off, or at least that the upside is worth the gamble.
