Lido has rolled out Curated Module v2, a significant upgrade targeting Ethereum staking infrastructure. This update lets validators boost their effective balance from the standard 32 ETH up to 2,048 ETH. The protocol expects this shift to slash the number of validators by about one third, aiming to streamline Ethereum's consensus layer.
According to Lido's Monday announcement, the new module supports Ethereum’s 0x02 withdrawal credentials, a technical change that allows for larger validator balances without impacting the execution layer. This means transaction processing, gas fees, and user costs on Ethereum remain unchanged. The protocol estimates the validator count could drop from approximately 880,000 to around 628,000 once the upgrade is fully adopted, though the migration has yet to begin and these numbers are projections based on current models rather than real-time data.
The consolidation is designed to reduce the volume of validator messages processed on Ethereum’s consensus layer, making operations more efficient. Importantly, stETH holders won’t need to take any action as the migration is handled automatically by the protocol. also Curated Module v2 introduces new bonding and penalty rules for node operators, increasing accountability. Future validator allocations may also take into account operator performance and contributions to the Ethereum ecosystem beyond the current methods.
After the announcement, Ethereum’s price showed little movement, reflecting cautious market sentiment toward network upgrades.
