Leopold Aschenbrenner’s hedge fund, Situational Awareness, soared 439% in just six months before a brutal margin call wiped out its entire publicly traded stock portfolio in a single trade. By early July 2026, the fund had ballooned to $45 billion, riding high on bets fueled by AI-driven market trends.
From AI Optimism to Market Downturn
Situational Awareness originally focused on power and chip companies, aiming to capitalize on what Aschenbrenner identified as the true bottleneck for AGI technology: physical infrastructure like power grids and transformers rather than just semiconductors. But that thesis shifted as roughly a quarter of the fund’s December 2024 stock holdings became Bitcoin miners, signaling a growing crypto angle that piqued the interest of digital asset investors.
July 2026 brought a harsh reversal. Memory chip makers such as SK Hynix, once a pillar of the fund’s portfolio, plunged amid a widespread selloff in AI-related memory stocks. Companies like Adobe, which the fund had bet against expecting share prices to fall, saw rallies instead. The Nasdaq-100 index dropped 10% from its June peak, amplifying losses.
Margin Calls and Forced Liquidations
Leveraging debt to amplify gains turned catastrophic when prices dived. Lenders including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan Chase demanded additional collateral, triggering margin calls so severe the fund had to instantly liquidate every public stock holding. This dramatic unwinding erased the massive gains the fund had enjoyed earlier in the year.
Aschenbrenner, known for his brief tenure at OpenAI’s Superalignment team where he raised AI safety concerns, shared his views in a 2024 essay series also titled Situational Awareness, predicting AGI could arrive by 2027. His fund was a direct play on these insights until external market forces intervened.
This episode highlights the precarious nature of highly leveraged bets on emerging tech, especially in volatile sectors like AI chips and cryptocurrency mining. As one of the most notable AI-focused funds, Situational Awareness’s collapse shows the risks hidden behind rapid tech-driven gains.
