Leopold Aschenbrenner’s hedge fund, Situational Awareness, experienced a dramatic downfall this July after a rapid surge in AI stocks earlier this year. The fund, praised for its 1,000% increase by May 2024, was forced to liquidate heavily leveraged positions amid a steep market correction in AI-related shares.

From meteoric rise to sudden crash

Starting in January 2026, Situational Awareness delivered a staggering 439% net return until the end of June, according to an investor letter cited by the Wall Street Journal. This exceptional performance was fueled by Aschenbrenner’s aggressive bets on companies like Sandisk, Nebius Group, and SharonAI Holdings. However, all three stocks dropped more than 30% in July, triggering margin calls that wiped out large parts of the fund’s value. The use of use multiplied losses, turning what was a winning strategy into a devastating blow.

Faced with massive cash demands, the fund began consulting investment bankers about an orderly wind-down. By midday, Citadel, Ken Griffin’s investment firm, had acquired the majority of Situational Awareness’s stock portfolio, marking a swift exit from the crumbling positions.

Background tied to FTX and effective altruism

Before launching Situational Awareness, Aschenbrenner was part of FTX’s Future Fund, an effective altruism grant-making initiative backed primarily by Sam Bankman-Fried’s personal funds, which were later revealed to have been misappropriated from FTX customers. Aschenbrenner resigned from the fund just one day before FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022. Afterward, he joined OpenAI’s Superalignment team but was dismissed by April 2024 following a dispute over a data leak.

He then channeled his energy into starting Situational Awareness, drawing in a few hundred million dollars to back his AI-focused investment thesis. While the fund’s rapid growth attracted attention, the collapse highlights the perils of overleveraging in volatile sectors. This pattern echoes the broader risks faced by investors chasing AI hype and shows the dramatic swings that define the current market landscape.
