Institutional trading dominates over 70% of OTC spot flows in crypto, reshaping altcoin momentum and liquidity patterns. The traditional ripple effect, where altcoins followed Bitcoin’s lead, is breaking down as big players streamline their portfolios.

Market facts by Wintermute data

Wintermute’s latest report reveals that during the first half of 2026, institutional investors accounted for 72% of the total OTC spot volume across all cryptos on the platform. This share rose from 61% in the latter half of 2025 and 59% in early 2025, highlighting how rapidly institutional influence is expanding. Despite this surge, institutions are much choosier about the tokens they trade. Between the first half of 2024 and 2026, institutional investors increased the variety of tokens they handled by 24%, while retail traders boosted their count by 76%. This selective trading means funds focus largely on a handful of favored assets, rather than spreading capital broadly across altcoins.

The report also finds that when a token’s price spikes, institutional engagement declines sharply within just 24 hours. Retail investors, conversely, tend to sustain trading interest for around three days. This behavior shortens altcoin rallies and impacts volatility patterns. Another major change is the disappearance of the historical trend where Bitcoin profits redistributed into smaller cap tokens, signaling a new phase of market dynamics.

Market reactions and emerging challenges

This concentration of liquidity into fewer tokens has immediate effects on market opportunity windows. Shorter rallies limit gains for traders betting on prolonged price movements in lesser-known altcoins. Meanwhile, smaller retail players might struggle to capitalize on momentum, as institutional flows effectively crowd out broader market participation. Such shifts could reshape the token landscape, favoring large, liquid assets over a diverse altcoin ecosystem.

At the same time, these findings parallel other trends in crypto asset management like BlackRock’s Bitcoin sell-offs linked to ETF redemptions, reflecting how institutional strategies influence market liquidity in significant ways.
