Patrick Steven Yaroch, a supervisory FBI special agent with top-secret counterintelligence clearance, walked into a federal building last week and admitted to stealing nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency. Prosecutors say he used his access to classified case files to hunt down crypto wallet passphrases belonging to foreign nationals under bureau investigation, then systematically transferred the funds into his own account.
How an FBI Officer Drained Foreign Accounts
The scheme was methodical. Between late 2024 and his arrest, Yaroch executed 10 to 12 transfers, each one erasing balances from people the FBI was already surveilling. Investigators recovered $925,426 of the stolen crypto when they moved in. What stopped him wasn't blockchain forensics or traditional detective work. A Justice Department colleague spotted him confiding over Signal on July 28, spilling details about the thefts, and reported it. One week later, federal agents arrested him.
During the interview, Yaroch confessed everything. Court filings quote him saying it was "eating him up inside." The Eastern District of Virginia now has him locked in federal custody facing charges of interstate transportation of stolen property and receipt of stolen goods. Both carry decades of prison time.
The Escape That Never Happened
Before the arrest, Yaroch had been planning his exit. Digital forensics uncovered ChatGPT logs showing he researched relocation strategies, asked about investing a hypothetical windfall, and looked up European residency requirements. He booked a trip to Portugal. He even secured power of attorney paperwork from a Portuguese law firm. The FBI fired him immediately once the affidavit went public.
Yaroch joins a growing roster of government insiders accused of weaponizing their positions for personal crypto gain. A government contractor's son faced similar charges in March for allegedly stealing $46 million from the US Marshals Service. A former CIA officer drew scrutiny in June over a concealed $40 million gold scheme. Each case exposes the same vulnerability: access without accountability, classified information without oversight.
