Ether.fi Ventures just backed Blockspace, a new outfit designed to professionalize the infrastructure layer that handles over 90% of Ethereum's actual transaction flow. Relays, builders, searchers, order flow mechanics, the stuff users never see but can't transact without.

Blockspace isn't rewriting the protocol. It's targeting what already exists outside it, the commercial machinery that moves blockspace around. The team, led by Drew Van der Werff, is building bridges with other Ethereum infrastructure players like Gattaca and Ultrasound Money. The bet is straightforward, a commercially healthy Ethereum ecosystem benefits everyone in it.

How Blockspace Actually Works

Two constraints define the operation from day one. First, it monetizes exclusively in ETH. Not stablecoins, not governance tokens, not equity. Just Ether. Second, the team capped its own stake at 15%, a deliberate ceiling to prevent the centralization creep that keeps Ethereum researchers anxious.

This move slots neatly into Ether.fi's broader infrastructure play. Back in April, the liquid restaking giant committed $3 billion in ETH to ETHGas, a blockspace forward market platform that lets validators and blockspace consumers hedge future block inclusion costs. Think of it as a futures market for Ethereum transactions. Blockspace extends that logic by making the underlying infrastructure solid enough to support those instruments at scale.

The Bigger Picture for Ether.fi

Ether.fi's core business in liquid restaking naturally pulls it into every layer of Ethereum's value chain. The protocol hit multi-billion dollar TVL and raised $23 million in Series A funding back in 2024. Every upgrade to infrastructure, every efficiency gain in blockspace handling, feeds back into the ecosystem's health.

The 90% figure matters here. When nine out of every ten Ethereum transactions flow through out-of-protocol infrastructure, that layer stops being a detail. It becomes the actual spine of the network. Professionalizing it, building commercial teams that only care about ETH and can't accumulate excessive control, shifts how the whole system scales.
