Enphase Energy just announced it's abandoning rooftop solar for something far more lucrative. The microinverter company is building power conversion systems for AI data centers, and it plans to manufacture everything in the US using the same production lines that have shipped nearly 88 million microinverters over the years.

The new platform is called the IQ Solid-State Transformer, or IQ SST. It starts at 1.25 MW and scales to 2.5 MW per unit. Each one packs 342 power modules built on gallium nitride technology plus Enphase's proprietary Kestrel ASIC chip. The company is aiming for 98.5% efficiency, meaning only 1.5% of electricity vanishes in conversion. Availability target is 99.999%, which works out to roughly five minutes of potential downtime per year.

Why data centers matter now

AI workloads are electricity hogs. Large language models need constant, reliable power, and they generate heat that demands precision cooling. Traditional power supplies and battery backup systems add weight, space, and cost. CEO Badri Kothandaraman positioned the IQ SST as potentially eliminating the need for those separate UPS systems entirely. The company joined the Open Compute Project as a platinum member in June 2026, embedding itself in the open-source hardware ecosystem that Meta and Microsoft use for data center design.

Enphase is targeting initial demonstrations by late 2026, customer pilots in 2027, and volume shipments starting in 2028. The company projects the US addressable market for these systems in AI data centers will exceed 11 GW annually by 2031. That's a massive opportunity, but it comes with real competition from established power infrastructure vendors who already have relationships with hyperscalers.

The transition makes business sense. Enphase has already proven it can manufacture complex power electronics at scale and ship them globally. The microinverter market is mature and commoditized. AI infrastructure is exploding, capital-intensive, and willing to pay premium prices for reliability.
