The U.S. dollar advanced on Thursday, boosted by a flight to safety triggered by rising tensions in the Middle East. This geopolitical unrest also pushed global oil prices past the $100 per barrel threshold for the first time since May.
The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index gained 0.3%, reflecting the dollar's appreciation against most major currencies. Meanwhile, Brent crude edged up to $100.60 in afternoon trading as concerns over supply disruptions intensified.
Oil Price Surge Sparks Speculation on New Highs
Market watchers are increasingly betting that crude oil might hit new records before the end of the year. Prediction markets suggest a growing chance that oil will reach historic highs by September 30, with probabilities climbing from 7% to 12% in the past day. Similarly, forecasts for surpassing previous peaks by December 31 have moved from 16% to 19%.
These shifts reflect the market’s heightened sensitivity to ongoing Middle East conflicts, which threaten to disrupt the flow of oil. Key organizations like OPEC and the International Energy Agency will likely play key roles in shaping how these risks evolve.
