D-Wave’s Alan Baratz has issued a stark warning about the future of Bitcoin’s security. Speaking to Yahoo Finance on Wednesday, he said quantum computers will eventually outpower the hardware used to mine Bitcoin, putting its proof-of-work system at risk.
Baratz didn’t provide a specific timeline but emphasized that the cryptocurrency world should start exploring quantum-resistant alternatives now, before the threat becomes immediate. The CEO revealed that D-Wave has already created an experimental quantum proof-of-work protocol. This new system leverages quantum optimization problems, which quantum machines can solve efficiently, and promises to keep mining competitive while fending off attacks. Remarkably, the prototype is about 1,000 times more energy efficient than Bitcoin’s current mining process.
Quantum Risks and AI Discoveries
Experts agree that today’s quantum tech is not yet powerful enough to break Bitcoin’s defenses, but progress is ongoing. The conversation has grown even more complex with fresh AI research showing potential new attack vectors on cryptographic algorithms. Anthropic’s AI model recently uncovered unknown vulnerabilities in weakened cryptographic systems, hinting at additional layers of risk beyond quantum advances.
